Top Albert Park fashion destination Filly’s Stable has dropped the “Filly’s”, rebranded as Stable and received a bold but approachable refurb. “It’s a bit more relaxed,” founder Lauren Nicolls tells Broadsheet. “[Customers] can shop and play with the jewelery in a non-precious environment.”

Nicolls opened the clothing and accessories boutique in 2008 while still working as an international fashion buyer, which she’s done for two decades.

The shiny new fit-out was guided by Fitzroy North-based interior-design firm Studio Manifold, which transformed the Bridport Street space. The open-plan studio now has gold finishes, baby blue walls, and vibrant pieces by local and European designers. You might find eclectic dresses by Spanish slow-fashion label Celia B, elegant staple pieces from luxury brand Self Portrait, or vintage-inspired collections by Rixo London. Footwear by British label JW Anderson has also proven popular.

Jean Cheney has always been a keen op-shopper, but on a recent trip to find bargains in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges she got an unwelcome shock.

“I went to three Salvos in my area looking for a few different bits and pieces, and a pair of women’s boots [was] $40 … didn’t matter the quality, the style, the branding,” Cheney says.

“I have a Kmart in my town and … there’s a Big W and Target. I can buy those products brand new for about that price.”

Ultra-fast fashion giant Shein is launching a resale, despite criticism that circularity can’t fix a business model reliant upon exploitation and overproduction.

Shein Exchange launched on Monday, 17 October, in the US, with plans to expand to other global markets next year. The platform was created in partnership with branded resale technology platform Treet. The app pre-populates customers’ previous purchases to streamline the resale process.

Shein is upfront about its motivations to get into resale — its goal is to bring any secondhand Shein sales that may happen on other platforms back into its ecosystem. While shopping at the Harbor Lifestyle mall in Mérida, Mexico this year, 24-year-old hospitality student Mascha Rudolph, did a double-take. The store’s big logo, all-white interior, and enormous size all screamed Forever 21, but she could have sworn the fast fashion retailer had shuttered all of its shops years ago.

The student from Germany, who’s completing a year abroad in Latin America, stepped inside and was immediately transported back to her teens, when she shopped at Forever 21, a store known for basics like t-shirts as well as “going out tops,” festival outfits, and clubbing apparel. Nowadays, Rudolph normally eschews fast fashion, but the thrift stores and sustainable brands she prefers are hard to come by in Mexico so she bought a baby-blue romper and imitation gold necklace during her visit.
